This one measures about 23.5″ x 33.5″
The Yarn
Loops and Thread Impeccable
- 2 skeins true gray
- less than half a skein each of 6 different colors of leftover yarn. The bright pink used the most so maybe a bit more than half a skein of that.
The Pattern
Foundation
With gray, ch 36
3dc in 6th ch from hook.
[skip 2 ch, 3dc in next] 9X
Skip 2 ch, dc in last ch. Do not end off. (this measured about 10″ from end to end)
Round 1
Ch3 (first st of round), 2dc, ch 3, 3dc, ch3, 3dc in sp.
3dc in ea space between the clusters across (9 3dc clusters).
3dc, ch 3, 3dc, ch3, 3dc in the ch5 space on the end.
3dc in ea space between the clusters across (9 3dc clusters).
Slpst to the top ch of the beginning ch3. End off.
Round 2
Attach new color with a standing stitch along one side in any sp between the clusters of 3dc. 2dc in the same sp.
Continue around with 3dc in the sp between the 3dc clusters, and 3dc, ch3, 3dc in ea corner ch3 space.
Slpst to the top of the standing stitch, end off.
The Border
Round 1: Attach gray and complete as in Round 2 of the body, slpst to top of standing dc, do not end off.
Round 2: Ch1, sc in same space as slpst. Sc through both loops of each dc around. 5sc in each ch3 corner space. Slpst to first sc.
Round 3 – 5: Ch1, sc in same sp as slpst. Sc in each sc around. 3sc in the center sc of the corner of the previous round. At end of round 5, slpst to top of beginning sc and end off, leaving a tail to weave in.
Weave in all your ends.
To adjust the size, make fewer or more rounds. To adjust the proportions of the rectangle, change the number of chains in the foundation by multiples of 3.

Mine love a good hand made blanket. Luna completely wraps herself up at night with her nose poking out the top. I love the colours your dogs should be snug.

Mine appreciate a bit of warmth when winter arrives, the rest of the time they are too warm to want to be on a blanket at all.

I would use the recommended hook for the yarn, or the size you regularly use with that yarn that works well for you. You will need to do more rounds to get the finished size.

How do can I determine how many chains to start with? I want to crochet rectangular granny square lap blankets for nursing home residents. I crochet other patterns but would like to start using this pattern too. Thank you

Hi, I want to do a granny rectangle blanket for a single bed. I’d like it to be approx 4ft wide and between 5 and 6 feet long, but really struggling to work out how many chains to start with to get the correct ratio. It doesn’t have to be exact. I know a lot of it is trial and error, but it’s for a Chrostmas present and i dont have the time to experiment. I was wondering g whether starting it with 36 chains like you have your doggy blanket would be about right? Any thoughts?

Things can vary depending on how you crochet and the yarn. A general guide is that once you do the foundation part of the dog blanket, and measure that, it will be the approximate difference between the length and width. The dog blanket measured about 10″ at that point, so the finished blanket was 10″ longer than wide. You may want to add a bit more, maybe ch 42. I do NOT KNOW for certain that the proportions will continue for a larger size as I have not made something larger than a throw, it should as the stitches are the same size all the way around. I would check measurements several times early on to make sure it seems to be working out to the proportions you want.

Thank you so much for that info, I havent been able to find any guidance on size anywhere, I knew there must be some sort of ‘formula’. I think I might not do it after all, as it’s to be a present. A bit too much of risk of it going wrong. Maybe I’ll do a granny stripe instead, and leave the rectangle until I can do one just for me as a stash buster, then it wont matter.

hi there. I’m loving this pattern. I’m currently doing a throw blanket and was wondering on a border. I’m wanting to do a single crochet but lost when it comes to the corners. I’m following the granny rectangle you have that is 3rd 2 ch 3dc so I’m hoping you can give some feedback on how to do single crochet with that. Thanks

I think on the last round I would do 3dc, CH 3, 3dc. Then I would sc in each dc, sc in the 1st ch3 of the corner, 3sc in the center corner ch3, sc in the last ch of the corner and continue with sc in each dc.

I did this with no color changes (I had variegated yarn) and I’m a beginner so I have a question; how do you get a big granny rectangle/square to not lean or spiral, I guess you’d say. Your “lines” coming out from the corners are so straight. Mine came out all crooked and leaning, even my center rectangle isn’t in the center anymore.

As you are crocheting, make sure each stitch in the 3 dc clusters are the same size and being made with the same tension (tightness). It is easy to make some of the stitches “taller” than the others which could affect things. Other than that, it is hard to know what may be going on.
